In 2019, the KBA Canada Coalition, led by the KBA Secretariat in Canada (WCS Canada, Birds Canada and NatureServe Canada), initiated an intensive process to identify a comprehensive set of KBAs in Canada, gathering data, expert input and advice, and developing specialized expertise in KBA criteria and guidelines. However, anyone can identify a KBA as long as a site meets KBA criteria as presented in the Mondial or national KBA Standards. The process is complex, and there are many rules about data standards, evidence, expert consultation, and more, so if you are interested, guidance can be found ici. The Secretariat can also provide you with guidance on documentation, including proposal forms and process guidelines, as well as help with review and other steps in the process. Eventually, all KBAs in Canada must be ‘accepted’ by the KBA Canada Steering Committee.
